I think he's going to be priced out of Evanston and it's actually no longer dry. If he wants a 45 minute commute (either purely in the car or combo car/Metra), he's going to have to stay geographically pretty close in. The North Shore is way too expensive. I think Oak Park or Beverly might be the best bet.

Metra has been around since the mid-70s.

EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: The train system didn't operate under the name "Metra" until the mid-80s. However, the same basic lines have been operating under the authority of the RTA since the mid-70s.

Oak Park isn't dry--in the last few years they've actually opened up a few more places. I'm not sure anywhere in Chicaogland is dry now--anyone know of a place? Oak Park and Evanston probably do have the least amount of bars per capita, however.

Even though Beverly itself is more white, the far south side is more racially mixed along black/white continuum, and IMO, people who decide to live in the area are fairly tolerant. Personally, I don't foresee a white/asian family having problems.

I think I was supposed to use "caucasian-asian family"?
Sorry!

Thumbs up Chicago's North Side

Upwardly mobile isn't lost among Chicago's Far North Side. I think Chicago's "Emerald Necklace" is being completely overlooked. Up near O'Hare (if the idea of jets doesn't scare you...) there's Edison Park, Norwood Park West, Norwood Park East, Wildwood, Edgebrook, Sauganash, Sauganash Woods, River's Edge and the like. Definitely some of Chicago's most 'natural' areas, these neighborhoods are settled among Chicago's reserve of Forest Preserves. Very family oriented, too!

That hasn't been my experience. I'm more surprised when a white guy from the southside doesn't drop the n-bomb within the first 30 minutes of conversation than the other way around.

I live in Norwood Park with my Indian-American husband (I'm white) and our 18 month old daughter. It's a bit out of the way (he has a 45 minute commute or so). Not a ton of diversity (my husband certainly added color to the neighborhood) but beyond that, we've had good luck here. The schools are EXCELLENT, that is why we moved here. Safe, clean streets and except for the O'Hare noise, a decent place to live. Not too much for public transport (I still use it but it takes longer) and not much in the way of restaurants you can walk to, but within a 10 minute drive are a lot of good places--Edison Park, Jeff Park and Park Ridge. No bars at all that I can think of. (Places serve booze but I don't know of one that is just a bar.)

Worth looking into, I think.

I forgot: both a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's have opened up in nearby neighborhoods, so we are really trying to get hipper!

We bought our 2500 sq foot, 4 BR 3.5 bath home for under $620K, which is amazing for Chicago.

Default Ok

I would recommend zipcode 60655 Mt. Greenwood Chicago Illinois, with that kind of money, you will live in a Mansion, and 90% of your neighbors, will be the same race as you, and members of Illinois Local Law Enforcement, I call it Copland South.

Do a search on this site using my handle MarquettePark, make sure you use my handle as it is spelled, there are five imposters on this site using variations of my handle. I have written extensively on this area of Chicago, zipcode 60655,
