Hi!

My apartment search has left me so overwhelmed I just don't even know what to do with myself.

I'll be moving to Chicago from Seattle come early January to finish the last two years of my journalism degree at Loyola University. Almost all of my classes will be at the Water Tower Campus, so I've gathered that Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, Wrigleyville, and Lakeview will most likely be my best bets as far as neighborhoods go. Is my thinking this correct?

I've been to Chicago once about a month back and fell in love with the actual Lincoln Park, so my goal was to find an apartment in that area. Sadly, I won't be able to make a trip back before I move-in. There's nobody I know in the area so that's not an option either.

My budget is allowing a max of $950 a month (with utilities please). Can anyone recommend some apartments or areas I should look at? I've looked at so many apartments and read so many reviews... I'm lost. I just want something safe, close to public transportation, and clean for a twenty-year-old female college student.

Do you think it'd be helpful for me to get a... you know, those people that help you find apartment agency things?

I don't know, apologies for the wall of text. Any help would be so incredibly appreciated!

This summer, me and my roommates had ~1.5 weeks (if i remember correctly) to move out of our apartment because the lease ended a month earlier than originally understood (stupid error). I only had 2 weeks left in Chicago (summer internship) so I just stayed with a friend at his apartment for those 2. The other 2 roomies used "those people that help you find apartment agency things" and got new apartments which they are happy with pretty fast/easily. Also, they are free. So...I think it sounds like a good idea.

If yo're OK with a studio, $950 is definitely doable in Lincoln Park. A 1-bedroom is possibly doable, but will be tight. The Chicago Reader and Craigslist are good resources for finding places, but given your short time frame, I'd look into one of the apartment finder companies -- they should not charge you by the way; they'll charge the landlord.

Renting a place sight unseen sounds pretty risky, but I guess you won't have any choice?

Find an Apt in Ukrainian Village where you just take the Chicago Ave bus to Water Tower.

Really, I'm just trying to find a quick commute to the Water Tower (not used to Chicago winters or winter period), not so much a trendy neighborhood. Being from the West Coast I'm used to greenery and water, so I was just trying to stick to what I know and enjoy (aka a huge park).

Sadly, I don't have much of a choice as far as visiting first goes. Thank you all for your help! (:
