I've seen studios in Edgewater listed at $550.

Chicago Real Estate, Edgewater Real Estate, Cook Real Estate, Neal Ratner

Go to "Rental Search" and type in your range. There's a couple studios under $550...but your monthly income will probably have to be 3x the rent, good credit, and no prior evictions!

ORRRRRRRRRRR

Find a roommate!

Look into Uptown or Logan Square. Probably only be able to get a studio. Edgewater too.

You can get a studio for 550 along the red line, but I can't vouch for the quality/livability of any such apartment. You also might have to come here first because it's very rare to see apartments thqt cheap advertised anywhere except in front of the building or by calling the manager (with the phone # in a sign on the building)

A room for rent in someone's place, check roommate/share on craigslist or the Chicago Reader. $550 isn't going to get you much even in Uptown or Edgewater, a room with a mini-fridge and a hot-plate or an SRO. There will be a few studios under $550 in the listings, I would be really skeptical when viewing them: look for signs of rodents, bed bugs, roaches and ask about utility costs. I've toured a lot of cheap studios and if the windows are really drafty and there are electric baseboard radiators or something else besides steam radiators, your bills could be ridiculous (I've even been to buildings where they try to charge an extra $50/month in the winter to cover steam radiator costs). Try looking at Pilsen, I've seen a few decent 1 br (even a couple cramped 2 br) under $600, maybe even far northwest side somewhere

Here's a few options for individual units (again, try looking at roommate situations instead):
