Are you referring to the medical industry outside of hospitals/clinics? Chicago has two very, very good medical centers/colleges (Northwestern and U of Chicago) and some others like Rush Medical. I have a feeling OP is talking about say, medical technology companies outside of these institutions (i.e. devices, software, etc)?

Exactly. Those are major medical/pharm companies. Allscripts is also headquartered in Chicago (Merchandise Mart) which is publicly traded, and does pretty well.

Also there's Medline in Mundelein, which does in the billions in revenue a year (they make tons of products).

Chicago area has its medical industry. Maybe the OP was looking for startup medical care software companies but those exist in Chicago as well.

Chicago has one of the largest medical districts in the USA as well as a number of very high ranking hospitals. It's one of the top cities in the country in the healthcare and medical industry.

Why do you think it's lagging?

In addition to the hospitals and pharmaceuticals, med devices, etc that are here, many of the medical organizations and societies are headquartered here. The ADA, the ACGME, the ACCME, the AMA, and the ASA are some of these.
