I use Virgin's 3g pay-as-you go wifi service which uses Spring network. From 9AM -6PM the speed is incredibly slow, worse than dialup speeds . I have tried various locations in Chicago. Outside those hours it is fine, i.e around 70kB/sec downloading..

Now they are offering a 4G modem with free unlimited data. I am hesitant to invest if the results are going to be the same slooooow speeds during peak hours.

Are you talking about using a cell phone data plan as your regular internet service? I would think that would be slow and unreliable no matter what provider you use. I would use Virgin/Sprint for your phone only, and get real high speed internet service at home for your regular computer use.

I am referring to regular internet service through the nationwide 3G modem...I travel a lot in Illinois, so need teh mobile option. The 3G works ok in all of Illinois, except from 9-6PM in downtown chicago..

I use Sprint service and consider it to be reliable enough for my phone, but I can't imagine using it (or any mobile provider) for regular computer internet use. It's not nearly reliable or fast enough. When traveling, I tend to use wifi at hotels, coffee shops, bars, etc. when I need fast/reliable internet.

I use both the 3G and the 4G on my phone. I find the 4G to be slightly faster, but if anything probably less reliable. Also, the 4G only exists in a handful of major cities. It won't work for traveling Illinois beyond the suburbs.
