I'm a bit tardy with this but all the pix of David Axelrod getting his moustache shaved for charity reminded me to post a bit about our recent stay in Chicago, which included an expedition to Manny's, which is apparently his favorite hangout when there's not an election going on. Briefly, the corned beef sandwich we shared was one of the two or three best meals we had on our five week 20 state trip. The Axe wasn't there because it was the day of one of the debates but my friend pronounced the matzoh ball soup excellent and the latke that they threw onto my plate as an extra was the best I've ever had. The next week we were in NYC and the slop they served us at the Stage Deli cost twice as much and wasn't half as good. I am more convinced that ever that Chicago is the best eating town in the US. Hope to return soon.

I had one friend who, on an office lunch date, I took to Manny's. Yes, the place is good. But, after that one visit, I couldn't get him out of there! Anytime the office was going out for lunch, he wanted to fall into Manny's.

Obama likes the place, too. Don't forget to get one of the halva bars -- they remind me of my youth. I'm not Jewish but I'm east coast born so this stuff is my soul food. Try the kreplach, the whitefish and the matza ball soup.

The place is not strictly Kosher but in the Kosher tradition, for the purists on this forum.

Then you'll be happy to know they went out of business on 12/1/2012 after being in existence for 75 years.

Is that really true? They DESERVED to be out of business. Good riddance! We should have gone to Katz's but didn't have time. Thanks for the info . My traveling companion will be delighted.

I personally never understood all the hype with Mannys. Yes, its a real cool place. You will see a cabbie having lunch next to a guy in a 3 piece suit. But IMO their corned beef is so darn dry. I have to smother it in mustard to make it edible
