I think what you're trying to ask is if Hyde Park and Kenwood are good areas. Yes, they're good areas for the most part. East 74th Street is "near" Hyde Park, but not really. You have to go through Woodlawn from Hyde Park before you hit E 74th.

Cottage Grove is a street. I'd say it's nearing the border of where things start to get shady in a few areas, although maybe a few blocks west of there..

Default Not like horseshoes...

Especially in Hyde Park, where the fall off in affluence is rather stark, it is not at all fair for folks to "stretch the boundaries" -- Hyde Park, Chicago - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kenwood is particularly starkly contrasted with the neighborhood to its north & west -- the mansions give way to pretty bleak landscape -- Kenwood, Chicago - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you want to live in Hyde Park or Kenwood the most common reason is for good access to employment of UofC. Signficantly less diversity / less local business / more threats to safety in surrounding areas -- http://goo.gl/svkc8

Do not fall for the "Sony guts" trick -- the safety / livability of "name brand" neighborhoods in Chicago varies considerably and being "close" is not worth any points -- Zohan electronic store - Sony guts - YouTube

I've always thought of Hyde Park as bounded by the lake to the east, 61st St to the south, Cottage Grove to the west and 47th St to the north.

If we're talking about Hyde Park Blvd and Cottage Grove Avenue, i.e. 51st/Cottage Grove, then no, I really don't think that's a good area. It's fine just a few blocks to the east of there, but west of Drexel Square is where things go downhill in a hurry. I don't know what it is about Cottage Grove, but the entire street manages to be pretty scary for miles. It's especially bad around 47th and 63rd, though really none of it is great.

I've seen several of your posts in various threads, and I'm completely baffled about what information you're trying to learn. Could you just tell us what your situation is so we can make an educated recommendation?

^ I believe technically to the north it's actually Hyde Park Blvd. I think 47th is Kenwood. 60th St to the south, although yeah I'd extend that to 61st since that's where U off Chicago's campus ends, or between 61st and 62nd.

That definition kind of works in practice, as those are the historical boundaries of the University of Chicago's influence. But that doesn't quite fit the community area definitions.

Hyde Park is bounded by 59th, Cottage Grove, 51st, and the lake. Kenwood is bounded by 51st, Cottage Grove, 43rd, and the lake. The area between 51st and 47th is sometimes called South Kenwood.

The university does have buildings between 60th and 61st, so many people think this area is part of Hyde Park. However, it's actually the northern fringe of Woodlawn.

I know that's what they say but growing up I always though of Hyde Park extending to 47th st.

Gotcha. Yeah I haven't spent enough time there to have an opinion of something like that
