That is correct when it comes to discussing population decline in Chicago.

Please, please, can the North Side be Brooklyn instead? I would prefer that.

(A Cleveland friend of mine who spent some years in New England did tell me that Chicago's three-flats reminded him of Boston triple-deckers.)

If you look at number of households in the city of Chicago, it rose in every census except the 2010 one, when it declined slightly.
The problem is that households are being created as simple residences and industrial buildings in hot neighborhoods are demolished to build new housing, often high rises. An increase in households means that more households are moving in than are leaving, and it could easily be the case that a LOT of households are leaving but are balanced out by a lot moving in.

Do you think Chicago will do an overhaul of the South and West side of the city in the future? I remember the same thing happened to San Francisco's south of Market St. area in the mid 90's when there was many abandoned commercial areas rotting away and the city transformed it into a hot location for shopping / entertainment.

I know the south side of Chicago is a bigger challenge given the much larger area that would need to be addressed but with a city of such stature and economic opportunities I can see a project like that paying off in the long run. Perhaps some new housing developments mixed in as well. Arriving at Midway Airport and seeing the surrounding area leaves a negative first impression IMO. Chicago should at the very least upgrade that area.

The most positive impact a city can have for it's visitors is to have the area immediately around the airport visually appealing.

Maybe. Paris sure doesn't need to have its airport area be appealing.
