I'm looking to build/buy a home in the Chicago city limits that have a zero carbon footprint, and would preferably be made with durable materials (i.e. not sticks n' nails - COB, compressed earth block, straw bale, any other ideas welcomed). I've seen a few condos open in Skokie that are being built...but that's about it.

My wife and I (no kids or pets, mid twenties) would like a 2 bed 2 bath, and are looking for something within ($200,000-300,000) as we are first time buyers. Oak Park? Evanston? Skokie? Any other neighborhoods you may be aware of...we just want to live simply and without a huge mortgage so we can work less hours and be open to loving people and each other!

inersolcorp.com can find it or get it done...We have two two bedrooms, zero energy 1,400 sf 340K....We also have connections to Passive Haus (German) which would be great to build in Chicago. Let's talk and simply change the world.

the main designation out there is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which has a number of tiers (silver, gold, platinum). im not sure how many condos in the chicago area are LEED, but there many which use LEED designated materials

you'll be more hard pressed to find something which is entirely carbon neutral, and in that case youd probably have to build. there are architects and developers out there who specialize in that, but i dont think your budget would allow for it

Default blog tracking green buildings in Chicago

GreenBean is a blog site that says it tracks built, in-progress and planned green buildings in Chicago. I haven't checked it out but it was mentioned in the Chicago Tribune earlier this month.
