Hi there, my boyfriend and I are looking to move to Chicago in about 6 months, I'm trying to figure out where we want to live but the city is broken up into so many different parts I'm wondering where is good and bad places to live. I'm going to be looking for an elementary teaching job, he'll be working in the downtown area so I don't want to be too far away. Anyone have suggestions for a place that is not too pricey but still in a decent area? Thanks so much!!!

Some good, safe neighborhoods that aren't too pricey are Lincoln Square, Andersonville, Ravenswood, Jefferson Park. All are along the el (elevated train) to get downtown. Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park, Bucktown are also good areas but are usually pricier. Chicago Reader Online Features is a good place to look for apartments.

Also what do you like to do? Are you big on bars, theater, restaurants? Do you want a young, dare I say hip, area or something a little more family oriented?

I'm so excited people are answering...I thought this would take a while..Well price range is between 700-950 and I would prefer more city type living than suburbs. I absolutely love the theater but truly we're not picky...just want a good place to live!

Are you looking for a 1 bedroom? I would check out Lakeview, Roscoe Village, and Wicker Park. They all have a lot of nightlife and have pretty easy commutes to the loop. Slightly cheaper areas include Andersonville and Lincoln Square. They are still nice areas, but aren't quite as dense as the others.

I moved to Old Town and love everything about it, location is perfect. Pricey though, but worth it IMO...

Don't really think you can get a 1br in Old Town under $950... you could get lucky though. Jessiegirls's suggestions were good ones.

There are many areas that are safe enough, affordable enough and close enough to nightlife other than most that people mention. Other than theater, what is important to you? Stores? Eateries? Bars? etc...
