Travel to the city and drive around. Or get some reading material and bone up on Chicago. Or move there for a while and write about what you see and experience. That way your work will sound authentic.

Thanks, everybody. This really helps out a lot.

Scratchie--I said the novel's partly set in Chicago. It's absolutely essential to the story for this to take place in Chicago. Not chosen at random. Also, a novel without specific street or neighborhood names would suck.

My character owns a supermarket. What part of the city should it be located in? It needs to be a good neighborhood, but not too upscale because he isn't super rich. Just a good location for a middle-class kind of grocery store. Street names would be appreciated.

Thanks very much!
Sounds like Tony's Finer Foods in Irving Park/Mayfair.

Emathias--just took a look at the google street view of the place you suggested. I think it might do very nicely. Thanks.

That was actually my first thought when I thought of this and put down Irving Park and Albany Park.

Why does it have to be Chicago? I'd recommend you write your novel about south suburban Country Club Hills. CCH is a solidly middle class suburb with beautiful homes and a large mega grocery store chain known for its fine quality foods ( Walmart Super).

Why does it have to be in Illinois at all? I'd recommend you write your novel about a small roadside pineapple stand outside of Port Antonio, Jamaica.
