It's voted Democrat in every single presidential election since 1960, with the exception of one. That was the 1972 election, and even Cook County voted Republican that year. I also only went back to 1960 because that's when their maps by county started on the site.

(They reversed their colors. Red = Democrat and Blue = Republican)

East St. Louis is also not the political nexus of the county; Belleville is. There are Republicans in the county, but nowhere to the same extent that there are Republicans in Monroe County to the south of St. Clair. That's a solidly Republican county just as St. Clair is Democrat. Madison County to the north is the more purple one.

People who trash Illinois are generally clueless, and do not live in Illinois. Chicago cannot be too flyover with 50M visitors who stop an visit every year. If it was a truly terrible state the Fortune 500 companies would flee, and the MM would move itself to Manhattan and take Nasdaq and CBOT with it. That Illinois elected three to the WHITE HOUSE, and put four in BIG HOUSE is not only ironic it is well deserved.

Yeah, the Manhattanite boy gadfly who runs back to NYC every weekend, rather than making an honest effort to give the city a fair shake. I wouldn't take this guy seriously...
