I wish suburban people would just admit they are afraid of lower income folks and non whites. That's the main difference when comparing suburban schools to city schools. CPS is 90% minority and 85% low income overall.

When comparing academic results of white kids where my kids go to a place like Park Ridge or Naperville, the student outcomes are the same if not better where my kids go (which is an attendance area school).

High School is the problem with CPS, at this point it's the only thing really holding it back. And even with HSs, there has been a concerted effort to turn around some of the neighborhood schools (like with the elementaries) that are now starting to pay off.

Yeah, what we're really trying to do is help a minority family avoid minorities.

I'm not sure you're familiar with the demographics of suburban school districts these days. This isn't the 1980s any more.

I definitely agree. There are many bad schools where their white population still doesn't perform well. However, decent schools with large minority populations often do have their white populations perform higher than higher ranked schools that don't have a lot of minorities. I also think that going to school with a good portion of minority students exposes the student to more which helps prepare then for the real world versus students who go to school in a sheltered 'bubble' community. I wouldn't want to send my kid to a school where it's 90% minority, but I wouldn't mind sending them to a school with a 40% minority population as long as the school is a good school for them..
