Lake Michigan & beaches & rivers
Forest Preserves
State parks
Plenty of park space & trails
Prairies
Designated bike trails/routes

Plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation just outside of Chicagoland too...Wisconsin and Michigan have a lot of hidden gems. If you think there's no outdoor activity here you need to get out more. If you can get outside, there are outdoor activities to partake in. So many bitter people on CD. It's amazing.

If you're bored then you're boring.

But seriously, when I lived in Chicago I would do stuff outside nearly everyday. Chicago and the Midwest will never have real mountains until an unforeseen geological event occurs. Until then, enjoy the lake, the parks, the bike trails, the forest preserves, go kayaking on the Chicago or Des Plaines rivers, (hell, go belaying or whatever on a skyscraper Skyline Plunge ), and venture outside of Chicagoland if you really desire rural hiking and biking. You're life is what you make of it.

Default Ever See That Massive Body of Water...called Lake Michigan?

The Great Lakes are no joke in terms of providing outdoor recreation opportunities for the Chicago region. Ever try sailing a boat across Lake Michigan? News flash, you can't do it in a few hours. Lake Michigan is massive and provides many outdoor opportunities. Frankly, sailing across Lake Michigan would not be for the faint of heart. If you need a real adventure, do it at the end of October.

Also, if you like to hike, guess what? We have the Dunes to hike. Be prepared for your legs to hurt. There are plenty of places to bike in the Chicago region too....

Now if you need mountains at your fingertips, then no, Chicago will not work. Go to Seattle instead for that (b/c they have mountains and water). But not every city can be Seattle. At least Chicago isn't like Houston where it is IMPOSSIBLE to do anything outside in the summer months b/c you can barely breathe! Or Phoenix where you can fry an egg on your car in the summer. Oh, but they have golf...oh, that's right, Chicago has tons of golf courses too....

Also, the music scene in Chicago isn't lame. Being one of the largest metros in the country it pretty much provides something for everyone. What music are you looking for that you can't find in Chicago?

What is it with people complaining about a city spouting off random facts like this? We're talking about recreational activities, not domestic migration. Unless you truly believe people are leaving Chicago in droves because of a lack of hills...

People aren't even leaving in droves. The region has anemic population growth, but it's growth. Lots of new housing starts along the fringe too. You don't build new housing along the fringe in a region as large as Chicago when it is experiencing population loss. Whether the gains in Chicago are strong enough to offset the loses downstate is a different story. Chicago's growth has been anemic in the past, only for the region to add a million+ immediately after. No one, not even Dallas or Houston, grows at double digits forever. It just doesn't happen. That's not what this thread is about though. Chicago has outdoor recreation.

Sheesh. Try living on Cleveland's West Side. Nobody here listens to any kind of music except classic rock. Except their kids, who only listen to rap.

This is so dumb. No, Chicago is not an outdoorsy city, but it has some, and what it lacks in that regard to that it makes up 100x over in its urbanity, culture and things to do.

You don't move to cities like Chicago, NYC, Boston, Philly or DC for outdoor activities.

This is like saying "Chicago has cold winters!" No ****...
