Nothing good in Columbia sportswear on Michigan?.
When it's this cold, I use Amazon.

I ordered my coat online from Lands End. These days stuff comes really quickly. LL Bean and Eddie Bauer also have good winter wear. If you want to go to a store, Uncle Dan's has a range of coats and jackets. There's on on Southport and one in Lincoln Square. There is a Lands End in Niles which isn't too far from the Northwest side if you have a car.

I also got my coat at Land's End. It's very sufficiently warm without being suffocating...though they don't appear to make my exact cut, anymore. Still plenty of good options!

How about Patagonia? Does it hold up in Chicago winter?

I like the REI store in Old Town/Cylbourn. It's huge and has a nice store layout. I stocked up on some good winter gear there a few years ago. Lots of good clothing for the winter.

I've never had one, but you see them all over, so I would think they do.

Yes, I swear by Patagonia. They have held up a little better than some of my other gear, including Columbia. YMMV

The real trick though is keeping both neck and head warm. The rest will follow

What about the eyes? I noticed that the cold is bearable if you're all covered up, like Damba is saying. Any tricks on preventing the eyeballs from hurting though?

I wear glasses which helps keep the wind out. I suppose you could resort to sunglasses or ski goggles.
