I know a place in an alley by State and Lake. It is a cardboard box, but you are close to everything and it will cost you nothing! :-) The rats are very friendly...!

Default try this

You didn't say what areas of the city you are considering. However, if you want to be in the middle of the small, local theatre scene that is primarily on the northside in the City. You might check out the Lakeview (60657 and 60613) areas or even further north in Uptown/Edgewater (60640). Could go still cheaper perhaps in Rogers Park (that is the extreme northern neighborhood but still in Chicago ), 60626.

You can go to the ChicagoReader spacefinder website and use the apartment search by zipcode feature to checkout studios. Or look on Craigslist. If a studio is too much, you might try a roommate situation.

You can certainly get a studio for around 600 bucks in some of the areas above.

Good luck to you.

What does "close to everything" mean? What do you want to be close to? An airport? Sushi restaurants? Belly dancers? Tell us what's important to you and we'll narrow it down. A rental budget might help too. A "small place to stay" could cost anywhere from $500/mo to $2,000/mo or more depending on several factors such as location and amenities.
