and the 24, 32 unit courtyards! and some of the 12-20 unit walkups.

I highly doubt the target tenant of a downtown apartment and a 4 plus 1 in Lakeview are the same type of person. In all likelihood the prospective tenant of a downtown highrise might be more similar to the Lakeview walkup tenant than the Lakeview 4 plus 1 tenant. There's some incredible apartments both downtown and in Lakeview. I agree with you that 4 plus 1's don't meet that definition, and I'd never look at one to compare because it's pretty clear a 4 plus 1 looks kind of run down.
Thats funny, i think you are right. I have lived in both kinds and i seem to gravitate toward the modern one which i am in now. Now for me, i need an elevator, so the walkups which have more character are unfortunately not going to work. thats how i ended up in a 4-plus1.

i forgot to mention something that another poster mentioned - the bathrooms are TINY. Only big enough for a sink, tub, toilet, and radiator. maybe 1-2 square feet to stand in.

There is on area in north Lakeview that is pretty, and that is Buena Park. They have some very pretty graystones there, THAT would be pretty to live in, i think. Also i was talking about East Lakeview which has more 4 plus 1;s. West Lakeview is much nicer.

I lived in a high rise at 14th and Michigan that was quiet; because of the concrete construction I never heard the people upstairs. Then we moved to a “charming” three flat in Lincoln Square and the people upstairs were noisy as Hell. So we moved to a place by the beach in St. Augustine.

When we come back to Chicago some day we’ll be looking for an apartment in a solid, quiet high rise.
