I’ve had grad-level statistics courses, did well in them, and love the subject. A “rate” is a frequency that takes into consideration the population over a time period. In a general sense, it’s the frequency/count divided by the population (or a proportion over a time period, usually 1 year). It’s why you could not compare total crime numbers of the city of Chicago (3 million people) with Baltimore (600,000). Chicago just based on population will have higher total numbers because it is 5 times as large. If you use rate (or more accurately “proportion,” since you were trying to get smart), Baltimore has more crime per population.

I was trying to make the point, which obviously went over your head and indicates you couldn’t pass a middle school-level math class, that Chicago (population 3 million) has a higher crime “rate” (or proportion if you’d like) AND higher total numbers (counts/frequency) than NYC and LA combined....

Is this more clear smart guy?

while arguing semantics, what some of those actually on the "lower end of the information spectrum" dont get is that no one thinking about moving to chicago, or actually staying here gives 2 sheets about "rate" of crimes/shootings/murders...All they see is 100 people shot on a weekend, 500-800 people killed a year, and all the other things the media extols about Chicago, and they make their minds up right then not to move here.

Where are your professors so I may kick them-- hard? University of Phoenix? Nobody would have passed any of my undergraduate-level stat classes, and certainly not my master's or doctoral-level ones, without understanding the difference between frequency of a sample or population vs. raw numbers, or why the former is far more meaningful. You are either lying or you faked your way through your classes.

Good. The fewer unintelligent/uneducated people moving to my city, the better. I think few would disagree.

Also, this isn't semantics being argued. It's basic math/stats and the meaning of numbers. There is nothing LESS semantic than that.

at this point, Chicago needs anyone they can convince to move there; either intellectual or pseudo intellectuals..and, dont worry, as a Sanctuary city, you will get plenty of unintelligent/under educated there without wishing for or wanting it..

I disagree completely. Rent in my neighborhood has increased 50% in 5 years-- the influx appears endless at the moment. I'd love to keep this place a secret, but everyone seems to keep moving here anyway.

your neighborhood is obviously high end, exclusive, or the far nw side, where all the cops and firemen live; no one is moving into areas that are not..and, rent increases dont con notate any sort of influx into an area; rents are exploding upwards everywhere in the country..

The census is clear on what's happening. High earning, highly educated folks are moving to Chicago and lower income, less educated are leaving.

Master’s or doctoral level course, when you can’t understand simple math concepts?? Good one..... I guess Devry really does let anyone in???

Yes, that Chicago has more homicides than LA and NYC combined is bad. We all understand that trumpites love to focus on that.

But when looking at the most important metric which is per capita rates, Chicago is not out of the ordinary for a US city. Atlanta has a higher homicide rate than Chicago, though very similar.
