Does anyone in Chicago actually use the Pedway during the winter? I know it exists but haven't met anyone who actually has used it. Is it only located in The Loop?

I use parts of it. It's just a sort of network of tunnels and elevated sections. It's not always continuous. It's pretty much just in the Loop.

I used to work in the Illinois Center (Michigan and Lake) and live in Wicker Park. I used it all the time in the winter/bad weather, I could get from my office to the blue line without going outside. Also, it came in handy for shopping on my lunch hours, because I could get to (the former ) Marshall Fields on State without going outside.

I don't bother. It's way too convoluted, disconnected/disjointed, and very little in the way of maps or instructions within the system to get from one place to another. It almost seems like the city is determined to keep it a secret. It's really only practical if it connects directly from where you're coming from to where you're going, like when sbd78 could take it directly from the train to her office.

Also, having the Washington Red Line station temporarily closed throws a kink in the system.

The pedway is great but not nearly extensive enough. It actually goes all the way from City Hall to Michigan Ave. (the metra station) but is closed off due to construction on Block 37. Bummer.

The elevated pedway goes from Lake and LaSalle all the way to Lake and State. That can be very convenient in winter but it shuts down at 6 pm. I've used both of the pedways in inclement weather.

If the weather is lousy I normally enter at Michigan and Lake (Michigan Plaza) to walk to my building at 303 E Wacker. I normally get off the Blue Line at Clark and Lake but it's a real pain to take the Pedway from there to Michigan (I don't think you can get across Michigan there).

I used to use it to get from the Red Line to the Aon Center (It would get you to the Prudential buildings and you could get to the Aon Center through there without going outside).

Great example of why people like me RANT about Chicago inability to acknowledge the reality of our winter weather!

They did NOTHING to make up for the closures due to Block 37 or the Red Line stations issue. Very discouraging! The developers apparently kow tow to the Mayor only when they want something then forget about the "little people" that actually occupy their buildings. City Hall responds only to those who "scratch their back" and just turn up the music to drown out the squeaky wheels.

Pedway COULD be a great asset, instead it is a half step above a sewer. Really like the complete lack of cooperation at State of Illinois Building & City Hall-- shows just how high up the dysfunction goes. Millions wasted.
