LA has been called the Southland.

As for sports...ehhh...NY has fallen so far in every league (or at least the Knicks, Mets, G men and Jets) I'm not sure how relevant second city would be now in that context.

Yeah, I don't think any Chicago sports fans considers these teams rivals in any real sense. The Nicks and Rangers might be considered rivals when they and the Bulls/Blackhawks are both playoff-competitive, otherwise nobody really cares.

It's nothing like, say, the Cubs/Cardinals or the Bears/Packers rivalry where each team's fans want their team to stomp the crap out of the other team even if they're both competing for last place and there's nothing at stake. I went to a Cubs/Mets game recently and they might as well have been playing the Colorado Rockies for all anyone cared, especially since they're not in the same division any more.
