boundaries for where you would live in Wicker Park/Bucktown/South Loop (Chicago: low income, apartment)

Hi guys and gals,

One of my friends is moving to Chicago and is likely moving to Wicker Park, Bucktown, or the South Loop. I am familiar with the neighborhoods in general, but what are the "boundaries" for the safe ares of these neighborhoods? I know that especially with Bucktown many people advertise Bucktown when it's not.

I don't really consider anything within Wicker Park or Bucktown's boundaries to be unsafe. If its west of Western, its not Wicker Park or Bucktown, but still may be safe.

I agree with Jdiddy. Personally, I think staying off the ground floor and not having to access your apartment from an alley are bigger safety issues. A short walk to the "L" along busy public well-lit streets helps too.

Now the South Loop is a different story... I've still never seen a satisfactory boundary described for the South Loop. It seems to grow leaps and bounds every year, and you really want to stay away from those projects to the east. North = Better for the most part down there.

Research needs to be done. There are plenty of low-income government supported newly built (the last 5-10 years) small multi-unit buildings (Bickerdike for example anyone?) in Wicker Park and Bucktown.

There are more than a few on the 2-3 streets east of Western in Wicker Park (closer to Division) and to a lesser degree in Bucktown.

You really do not want to live on the same block or very close to one of those.

On on the edge near Western, on Oakley, and everything here is A - OK. But when I moved back from Houston with $10,000+ stuff of bikes in my minivan, I think thugs had an eye for it and I had to unpack that stuff quick!

I think this may be what we had in our alley. We lived on Evergreen, but shared an alley with Wolcott--and there were two new-ish (1980s?) low income buildings on the alley that caused BIG TROUBLE for us. This was in the heart of Wicker Park on a block with multi-million dollar homes. I now avoid the so-called "affordable housing" like the plague and have embraced staunchly conservative housing policy. Living in Uptown pushed me over the top!

South loop???

the Harrison north/Wells West, Michigan East, Roosevelt South corridor is safe. once you past roosevelt though... I'd only go east of State street down to 18thish.
