From recent searches it looks like development jobs are still available, specifically .net and java positions. The IT positions that are hurting seem to be PM, Systems Analysts, and help desk. If he's a good developer that understands the SDLC and can do some Systems Analysis he shouldn't have a prob finding employment.

lol, than that's fine. I charge similar for freelance also. We have an impression that the OP was talking about a stable full time position.

I don't agree the fact that you can't find talent from people who are working for 80K to 100K

You probably would be around the same range if you are working in a full time position depends on your experience. And since the OP has 6 years of experience, so 80K to 100K is about right.

I know some smaller companies are paying less.

There are about 1,000,000 people in "IT management" in Chicago - they don't make top $$s & never will as they largely have interchangable skills (thats assuming they have any skills at all of course) & experience. The guys making the top bucks are hardcore techies w/ high performance server development experience & there are guys out there making that now.

Sorry, I didn't realize that I needed to go into great depth for the "d*ckheads". If you had read my first post in this thread you would have seen that he does security which is a particular sect. He works directly with that side daily and in fact since he has yet to hire a firewall guy he is doing some daily grunt work on that side of it as well.

Since the OP is a JAVA specialist I didn't really want to get into specifics, since it is not at all applicable to him.

seriously, not all IT management guys are making that much money, don't let the "management" word fool you.

I'm not sure that describes any IT job right now

But yeah, there is a big difference between full time employment and contracting and consulting gigs. I thought the they were asking about consulting gigs.

You expect a W2 and some "stability with that". $80K's good pay.
If you are a gun for hire at $80K ($40/hr) you are selling yourself short. There are plenty of companies that will hire you at $40/hr then act as a middle guy where they bill you at $80 - $90 /hr.

If gotten a few emails from people who act as a middle guy. I make it clear that I'm not interested in hearing anything less than $65 an hour. I get $45/hr offers all the time. They get a terse email back saying "please remove me from your email list".

Man, I'd be so glad to make the rates you guy get on contract! My last NASA job as a Proe Designer / Detailer - I made $32.10 / hr split on per diem. Did a 2 day scab job at $60 /hr and what a dream paycheck of $1017 on 16 hrs of training work!

What skills and resume do you guys have that commands over $40+ / hr?
