I'm thinking of moving to Chicago to take a job at Loyola Medical Center. Not looking for validation but I am curious as to what the general feeling is with regards to this institution's reputation throughout the city. Unlike a lot of cities dominated by one or two major hospitals, Chicago has UofC, Northwestern, Rush, UIC, Loyola, etc. Any thoughts?

Loyola Medical Hospital is not in Chicago. It is in Maywood.

each hospital in the Chicago area has it's specialities. I think Loyola has a great burn treatment center, but I guess it depends on what field your in. Loyola is by far the most popular in the near west suburbs given its location (Maywood, IL)

You are correct. We are blessed with some tremendously competent medical care. The statistics on the number of physicians and other medical professional that are educated in the region are impressive -- teaching hospitals like ours are quite a resource. Many of the very talented physicians work at more than one institution, as there is good cooperation between those 'majors' listed and some of the more community oriented hospitals. This is especially true for things like the pediatric specialties that may be centered in Children's Memorial. Also do not discount the quality of trauma care provided by the government run system of Cook Co.

Loyola's strengths are broad -- cancer, trauma, neo-natal, cardiac care and others have many successes.

If you are not familiar with area in which Loyola Medical Center is located, it is some what unusual -- it is about 10-15 miles due west from the UIC/ Rush/ VA/ Cook Co Medical District, and adjacent to a State psychiatric facility and other VA hospital. There are "life flights" and any MANY transfers of patients from other sites on a routine basis. Much of those transfers are NOT from the City but the broader region, literally including FARMING communities a 100 miles downstate.

Thanks. I know it's in Maywood which is a ways out west but from a national perspective, Loyola is thrown together with other large Chicago hospitals. Specifically, I wonder how cardiology is viewed.

The University of Chicago Medical Center is the highest ranked Chicago area hospital by US New and World Report:
Top American Hospitals - US News Best Hospitals

In cardiology, Northwestern Memorial is 19th nationally, University of Chicago is 20th, Loyola is 31st, and Rush is 45th:

There are THOUSANDS of routine cardiac surgeries performed in DOZENS of Chicago area hospitals. The really "interesting" cases treating unusual conditions are more likely to show up the top institutions, but if you are doing a fellowship or similar work / studies it is VERY hard to predict which is best. Shear size and spread of the regional population means things are MUCH more spread out than the action that is drawn to someplace like Cleveland Clinic. The physicians I know do sometimes talk when they gather about the pleasant life / lack of "vagabondness" they have had in the region, but I really don't know if that is what you are asking about -- some place like Cleveland probably trains more physicians that then relocate to distance places. Chicago area retains a hiuge percentage of doctors that come here for medical school...
