lol. true. harpo is/was extremely popular with a huge segment of American TV viewers to be sure. But she is also thought of as a joke to much of America outside the Chicago sphere. She is a humanitarian and can sell millions of copies of books for authors whose names barely cross her lips.

if I had her money I'd leave Chicago too

I can't stand the Oprah, and most of my friends share my sentiments. Who cares what she or any other celebrity thinks.

Me too. I think I'd keep a pied-a-terre in Chicago, but I definitely would NOT be here during the winter months.

Like her or not, she brings hundreds of thousands of people into the city each year who spent millions of dollars while they're here.

I don't understand your comment? What's unfortunate about the WSJ reporting something?

one would hope a reputable newspaper like the WSJ would resort to using gossip rags as a source, if that was the case. what next, quoting the Nat'l Inquirer?

I think Oprah's initial success was in part made possible because Chicago is such a progressive, dynamic city. The first minority woman to have her own national talk show, if I am not mistaken. Obama is the first Black president. Both were non-Illinois people who moved here and in this city achieved a level of success that catapulted them into national success. I think Oprah realized Chicago was in part responsible for her initial success and that is why she was loyal to our freezing city for so long. As a woman professional who has lived in many other parts of the country, I appreciate that Chicago welcomes "outsiders" and minorities without the level of discrimination and small-mindedness that some other parts of the country are plagued by. The people of Chicago are for the most part truly great people. Unless you have lived in other parts of the country you may not appreciate that. And there is an energy here that can fuel success and achievement. Most Chicagoans could probably live elsewhere. They stay because Chicago offers a lot. The winters are harsh so I do plan to spend part of the winter in Florida.

Well, that's exactly the problem. There are people stupid enough to care what a celebrity (most of whom don't have much beyond a high school education) thinks about the world and politics and will actually vote or think a certain way because some self-important media ***** (no, I'm not calling Oprah a *****....) tells them that's what they should think.

Thank you! That was my point, and a big reason why I got out of journalism.
