Why in the world would not being able to discuss shortcomings with a pastor bar one from discussing them with a spiritual leader?
I am told this preacher does not counsel the members of his church. He wants church members to only talk to god. He is basically saying: "Don't bother to call me if you are in turmoil".

Doesn't mean that the person could not talk to another spiritual leader in the church, one of the elders for instance.
Do you feel it echos what is going on in your specific church?
And if so, what are your thoughts concerning what it is saying?
NO! NOT "MY CHURCH" BUT MY GOD DOES
1John.1 Verses 8 to 10: "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [B ]If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us."
1John.5 Verses 16 to 17"If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.
John.20 Verses 20 to 23]" When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

And Jesus breathed on them. That is huge and they were empowered by the Holy Spirit. To ignore the biblical origin of confession is basically an act of irrational denial.

God forgives the sins.
I am so glad you are finally getting there.
For centuries protestant apologists have erroneously accused the CC by saying priests forgive sins. That is a myth propagated by acrimonious preachers. The priest is simply absolving in the name of the Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit.

According to the verse above the people to whom Jesus was talking would forgive sins and you claim Apostolic succession, so where does that leave you?

The priest speaks for Christ at the confession booth. Whether this is true or not is moot. The person doing confession feels better and truly remorseful.
Obviously, the priest is not God, but this is generally very useful to the sinner. Unfortunately Protestant ministers are out of the apostolic succession loop to absolve sins in the name of Christ. That is why they simply tell their parishioners to go home and confess to God.
Unless I have harmed that of another, everything else is between the creator and me.
