Yes we are to trust God, but part of trusting God is to follow the counsel of his Word.

Remember it is written, you reap what you sow. If you sow certain ways of life, you will reap the outcome.

You've always got to remember that much of what the Scriptures talk about in relation to such things is spiritual in nature. We are two creatures: spiritual and human, and it is the spiritual things which are paramount. The body passes away and all that is left is our spiritual behavior, which is the only thing believers will be judged on. It will be determined first whether we accepted Christ's payment of our sin debt and, secondly, how well we performed the work God sent us to do.

Neither of those include rote obedience to any rules, including diet and/or healty living principles.

It has always amazed me how many Christians wouldn't dream of having a beer, but don't think twice about gulping down 3-4 sodas (often more) every day. And if they can't get soda, then it is candy bars, donuts, or cake. Total extreme sugar over-dose...they are addicted to the stuff. It doesn't surprise me that Americans are one of the most obese people on earth. As some on this thread have observed, even some of the churches condone these bad eating habits...and, sadly, we are teaching our children from a very early age to do the same...
Perhaps it might help if we put a "sin tax" on all types of sugar, to discourage it's use, just as we do to alcohol and tobacco...

I think the point is not that over-eating is okay. It's that anything done in excess (including but not limited to overeating) is not okay. God has given us passions and appetites. He has also given us guidelines and boundaries pertaining to them. Gluttony is when we do not keep our appetites within the boundaries He has established.

I was thinking of free will as all of the decisions we make in our daily lives. I believe that God knows the choices we will make, but that he lets us make them.

My church actually teaches that we were dead in our sins, and therefore not able to choose God. He chose us. We are saved at our Baptism.

American churches are nothing more than a business fighting to stay alive in a down turned world. These churches seldom preach the truth, the gossip, but instead preach what the people want to hear. Gluttony is simply a form of greed. The statistics of Americans speaks for itself in that the US is the fattest country in the world. The sin of gluttony hasn't be forgotten it is avoided. So let's all thank brother Bill and the Lord for bringing six dozen boxes of donuts to church today.

IMO sins such as coveting, gluttony, envy , place the created above the Creator.

When is over-eating actually gluttony?
Most overweight people it is due to a gradual accumulation of more calories than they needed over many years, some days more than others.
Most people over-eat on special occassions such as Christmas, and usually know it and try to redeem themselves in the following days.
It falls into the same grey area as drinking alcohol, when does a glass of wine progress to the sin of drunkeness, or should we really just abstain?
Other sins are absolute - eg envy, adultery stealing etc - and there is no grey area.

Where've you been? Our Christianity stopped being "Christian" when Christians started burning people on crosses, forcing mothers to give up their children, judging others in general.

If you read old Christian literature, you will find many modern day Christians are heretical, indeed. It isn't true for every one, but for many.

Focus on your thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors, and let God worry about the others.
