Is it possible for two people to read the same passage of scripture and come away with two different meanings and say that both are correct?
I have a hard time with people who say the scriptures can mean one thing to one person and something different to someone else and they are OK with that...I know everyone has a personal application they can apply to the scriptures they read, or they might have a verse that stands ot to them during a certain time, but the meaning should remain the same, correct?
Of course, as we gain in knowledge, we may find out that the meaning we thought the scriptures had actually meant something different. But in that situation, the original (incorrect) meaning is null and void.

Just count how many different religions there are with regard to Christianity and you'll see there apparently are hundreds of ways to look at it.
The main reason there are so many opinions, is because too many just do not want to believe that it means what it says ! It conflicts with what they think, or what they want to think, or what some one else says it means.

Sure.
Take Proverbs 13,24 for example.
Quote:
Proverbs 13 24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
The thing is that it depends on the child whether you should spare the rod or not.
And not on scripture.
I mean it doesn't mean that a parent who never spanked his child hated that child.
There even are people who keep beating their children because they are incapable of loving anyone but themselves.
I agree with ILNC, that if we have the love of the Lord in our heart,that we will understand the readings of the Bible and know its true meaning.
Thats why church is so important,because we are there for the clarification of scriptural readings ,edification, the building up of one another in the Lord and sanctification the setting apart as Christians that unites us as one body.
[b][quote][say that both are correct?QUOTE=stuckinbalad;4676731]Is it possible for two people to read the same passage of scripture and come away with two different meanings .
Sure;
because each person tend to look at things naturally through their own view
of what they feel that it should mean;
The Holy Spirit "leads you and guide you to all truth" of a matter (in this case the scriptures.
God Bless

I know where you are coming from, but the point of the post was this: lets say someone takes Proverbs 13:24 and says that is the reason they spank their kids, because their interpretation of the scripture says that you spare the rod and spoil the kid, therefore I will spank my kids to make sure they aren't spoiled.
I know how Tricky D interprets this passage (which is what I would say is likely the intent of the passage) but can you fault the person who works by my example above?
Can scripture be understood differently and still be correct? How often do you hear someone say "I feel the verse says x-y-z to me" and another perosn says "well I feel the scripture says a-b-c to me".
Proverbs 13:24 means exactly what it says,if we don't discipline our children by not spanking them for doing wrong we as parents don't love them. I don't care what child it is.
