We are our brother's keeper, and the words and actions we distribute are weighed.
Big wisdom from "little" Elmer!
Primarily we are responsible for ourselves and our family - as much as we may be accountable for concerning some in our families.
We're also to be lights to the world around us - in word and deed as the Spirit leads.
'And encouragers, helpers and even edifiers to those in the body.
I think the answer is both yes and no, depending on if you feel lead by the Holy Spirit to quote Scripture. Sometimes people want to know what are you basing your belief on, and sometimes people say don't give me Scripture, just tell me what you believe. But if we listen to the Holy Spirit and let Him guide our words, we'll be ok.
Must a Christian/believer feel obligated to back up everything he says by quoting scripture, usually followed by his explanation of the meaning of that scripture according to what he has learned from his "help books", his pastors teachings or any one else's of scripture interpretations?
Personally, I think that one who has the Holy Spirit within them and has a basic knowledge of scripture can trust the Spirit to be their guide in conversation with other christian/believers on things of God..Personally, I would rather see God in the eyes, the personalities and the words from a believer, (and hope he sees that in me) than to try to convince each other that God is found only within the pages of the bible, and that He has given him/her a gift for finding hidden messages there? I would rather hold a good conversation in sharing, learning with lthe love, wisdom and guidance of the Spirit of God coming from myself and the person I am sharing with..Shouldn't His Spirit be evident and showing through you as a mature believer?
......Hi blue...great question. I respect your feelings on this, nothing at all wrong with a conversation filled with the love, wisdom, and guidance ushered in by the Holy Spirit...I think...(and this is only my opinion)...that this forum allows people to scan over the many threads, choose one that jogs their interest, and not only give a reply, BUT, also, for some, to actually investigate the answer...(and in our case, in this forum, we would do our investigation in the Scriptures), where we are not only giving an answer in truth, but we ourselves are learning from it also...thanks to the one who posted the thread in the first place...It's a beautiful thing I think, and I personally thank God for this forum, it causes me not only to search for the truth, but to search myself...some of these threads ask me things that I would have never thought of to ask myself! I think there are appropriate times that we should back up our replies with scripture, because that allows the person who is posting their reply to protect him/herself from being labeled "pretentious", I don't think it's about someone feeling they are more "gifted" than another because they seek the Scriptures...but more, I think it's about standing in the gap for readers who, for whatever reason, can't or won't read the Bible for themselves, and who really want to know what God has to say about the subject. I think more Christians should read the Bible, it's so much more than just a coffetable-dust collector...it's a bag of seeds...precious seeds that are meant to be planted into the hearts of man, to grow and produce that 'evidence" of the fruit of the Spirit you so graciously gave credit to! .........Love. +1rep4u!
