Everyone is in such a hurry, can that possibly be good for your health? If I recall correctly, the days when I used public transportation (mass transit) my ride to school or work and back gave me time to feast my eyes on interesting and beautiful neighborhoods and my mind could wander to happy thoughts or serious contemplation. We have created our own monster - urban sprawl, crowded roads and highways, always more and more. STOP, OR AT LEAST SLOW DOWN and "smell the roses."

No it is not good for your health. That is why I lucked out immensely about 30 years ago when my company decided to relocate to an industrial park less than 1 mile from my house. The commute dropped to less than 5 minutes, a total of 3 stop lights. But the high tech industrial park they selected was in the fastest growing suburban residential area in Cincinnati. How lucky can you get? Extremely short commute to work and in one of the most desirable residential neighborhoods. I have been retired 10 years now, so my short commute was just 20 years. But a great 20 years it was. I convinced my brother to move here, we are both retired now and can conveniently walk between houses.

Not everyone can get that lucky, in a location extremely close to home and a very desirable place to live. But smell the roses definitely. The older I get, I have begun taking the lawn tractor, running over some of the 15 or so flower beds I had, throw some vegetation killer on them, and replanting them in grass seed. There is a limit on how much weeding, cultivating, thinning and replanting I am willing to do now. The beds I have left I have been converting to the Knockout Roses. Those little guys are practically indestructible. So yes I like smelling the roses.

Our suburban areas have some very good companies and job opportunities. Go get a job there, move there, and have the ability to smell the roses.

Hi BJLundy--

I never saw it that way - I saw the additional hassle of getting to the train station/bus stop, dealing with the jerk at the ticket counter, waiting 15-20 minutes for the mass transit driver when he/she is running late, fighting to find a seat, having to deal with weird smells, creeps, loud people talking on their cell phones, and inconsiderate jerks in general.

Give me my car anyday. I haven't taken any form of mass transit since the day I got my driver's license.

I can listen to my music as loud as I please without interrupting anybody else, I can go as fast or as slow as I'd like, and yes, I do plenty of contemplation while behind the wheel.

I'm assuming your like many other Cincinnatians who don't travel, but I wouldn't envy you being in New York City without using public transit

I've driven there msyelf, not fun, mainly just to get in drop a friend off and get out.
