I visited Charleston (having seen so many gorgeous photos and pictures)...and when I went there, it was just as great as the photos. However, that part of Charleston isn't that huge. You don't have to go too far, and you drive right out of it again. The mass majority of metro Charleston (and the bad areas of the city proper) really are not interesting at all.
Tampa, the downtown, is not interesting at all either. But, the surrounding areas of St. Pete, and all the ocean, beaches, and just tropical feel in general...is all pretty cool.
Previously to having visited both, I'd have said that Charleson is where I'd rather live. But once seeing how little Charleston really had to offer (beyond a half day of walking around the touristic area), I'd quickly go with metro Tampa Bay.
