Criteria are as follows:
1. Culture: Draw, subjective, different and appeal to different people
a. Restaurants: I'm Asian, San Jose has the best options for that in the country, from my experience they're evened out with San Francisco for this category.
b. Nightlife: Columbus, no doubt. San Jose has an okay one, but its not outstanding.
c. Events: Colymbus
d. Museums, historical locations ect: San Jose
2. Jobs: Columbus, because it is not economically affected to the extent of San Jose by the recession, but San Jose has the far larger economy by sheer output.
3. Healthcare: I don't know.
4. Education k-12 plus Higher education: San Jose SHINES in this category, especially for k-12 my cousin has told me his experience with his kids, and for higher ed theres Stanford in the San Jose MSA.
5. Geography, Weather: San Jose has more of a tame weather, Columbus has seasons. I would take San Jose here personally.
6. Transportation, infrastructure: Infrastructure- Columbus, Transportation- San Jose. Columbus from my experience has better buildings and their infrastructure looks good. San Jose's infrastructure is mehhh but their public transit is better than Columbus's.
Overall: I would take San Jose, my cousin lives there in Cupertino, and I'm very close to him and his family, practically like hes my brother. I also like the hiking experience in the mountains areas in the city. Theres a lot I like about San Jose, it is one of my top 10 cities, because the way the city is built I love that, the more relaxed and spread out type of living. Its just what I could want.
Having lived in California before, spending alot of time with friends in SanJose ( Silver Creek area ), it's a beautiful city ... extremely sprawled out though! SanJose has beautiful weather, an emerging city centre and nice residential areas, but ....
Columbus offers more of an "authentic urban or big city feel" in comparison to SanJose. Both of these cities hold advantages over the other in certain areas, but I personally prefer Columbus for several key reasons ...
1. Cost of living ( one of the best in the US ) 2. Culture 3. Change of seasons 4. Traffic ( It's a breeze in Columbus, thanks to an impressive freeway system ) 5. Economy / Job market ( a thousand times better in Columbus )
2. Culture 3. Change of seasons 5. Economy / Job market ( a thousand times better in Columbus )
2. Eh? Can we define culture here for once?
3. Change of seasons or uncomfortable winter/summer extremes? Yeah, exactly.
5. It's easier to get a job in Columbus because there's less competition. In a robust economy, who has the edge?
I'm not sure this is apples to apples. SJ is part of a major megalopolis, while Columbus stands relatively alone. Yes, Dayton and Cincinnati aren't far, but it's nothing like the Bay Area.
I personally prefer to live in a city like columbus.. where $450,000 buys me a 3,300 squre feet of luxury downtown living, as opposed to a "virtual shoebox" sized home in san jose for that price or even much more! plus, who wants to reside in california ... a state that is bankrupt, has an outrageous cost of living and far too many natural disasters. sure it gets cold and hot in columbus, but at least my dishes in my china cabinet are safe from breakage in those san jose earthquakes! lol

"far too many natural disasters."
Really?
I do agree, you will live in a very small, probably older house for the type of money you are talking about.

I noticed that people who live out of state seem more afraid of earthquakes than actual California residents.
