Philadelphia's is a classic east coast urban center, it trumps anything you can find in the midwest, including Chicago. Chicago is great but it is no east coast city, and for that reason not as urban.

I'm a Philly guy, but I disagree that only east coast cities exude urbanity. This view of Chicago looks pretty urban, doesn't it:

Chicago has a higher population density, over 1 million more people than Philly, and is about 75 square miles larger than Philly. Chicago is still a powerhouse of manufacturing and finace, whereas Philly clearly is not.

Both great urban cities.
Yeah, but venture 10 miles south of the Loop and you will see a drastically different landscape with suburban styled bungalows. Ten miles outside of CC, you will see rowhomes galore. Philly is definitely more urban and structurally dense.

10 miles out from CC puts you in the areas near I-295, I-276 and I-476. I really wouldn't say those areas are more urban or dense than Chicago is on the north side, down by 80th Street or out by Oak Park. If anything they're much more wooded and suburban areas.
Philly's dense rowhome areas tend to end within 5 miles or so of CC except up to the north/northeast.

fair points, though North/Northeast it extends the longest about ten miles - into Jersey def Suburbs, South is Delaware County inner burbs. West is a mixed bag but some very suburban
