Dying laughing over here

Chicago has bungalows as the predominant housing type, Philly has rowhouses as the predominant housing type.

This is why Philly feels denser at street level.

Go outside the respective city cores, and you see bungalows in Chicago and rowhouses in Philly. Really the only apartment city in the U.S. is NYC.

No it doesn't.

This notion has already been dispatched in this thread, more than once now.

No, this is wrong. Chicago is not an apartment city. It's more a bungalow city.

If you leave downtown Chicago, bungalows are the predominant housing type. There are almost no highrises away from the lake.

But in Philly, rowhouses predominate.

Last time I was in Chicago (this past winter) I was really impressed with the quanitity and quality of high-rise residential buildings. Quite a few are clustered near the lake, for obvious reasons... but there are quite a few of them, no doubt. In fact it reminded me of the way Toronto looks these days, but with nicer architecture.

Ok, so should we trust you, or trust the Census?

I'll take the Census:

According to the Census American Community Survey, 26.3% of Chicago housing units are in detached single family homes.

And only 22.6% of Chicago housing units are in 20+ unit buildings.

So, in other words, there are roughly 50,000 more Chicagoans living in single family homes than in apartment buildings.

Well that's a very interesting interpretation of the facts. And by that I mean "completely nonsensical interpretation."

Ok, so according to you, the Census is lying, and there really aren't 50,000 more Chicagoans living in single family homes as compared to apartment buildings?

Ok, I guess. Whatever floats your boat.

To me, I'm actually being VERY fair, if not too fair. Most 20 unit buildings won't be highrises, or even midrises. But I'm including all 20 unit buildings in the highrise/midrise category, just in case (because we don't really know if it's 50%, 30% or whatever).
