In any case, though, I don't think downtowns are a good representation of what day-to-day life is like for most people. You really have to compare suburbs to suburbs.
I realize anecdotal evidence only goes so far toward making a point, but I honestly can't think of one single instance where I ever thought to myself, "Gee, I'd like to go visit X city and immerse myself in its SUBURBS!" I don't know anyone else who has either.
I'll go with Chicago. I don't think I could stand the summers in Phoenix or being near a desert. Phoenix, unlike Chicago, is a relatively isolated major city. With Chicago you have tons of cities close by...St. Louis, Milwaukee, Indy, Cleveland, Cincy, Louisville, Minneapolis. Plus you get a more continental climate which I tend to like, and Chicago's summers while they can get very hot do not get anywhere close to ovens like Phoenix. I'll take Chicago. In any case, given I am a resident here and love it and have been to the Southwest, I'd live in the Midwest before I'd ever live in the Southwest.
Thanks for relpying, but its no joke. I was just trying to make a point... there are some folks who think Chicago is a complete dive, apparently theyve never been there.

Oh please, give me a break! Phoenix may not be by the ocean if you're talking isolated that way but it's close to quite a few major US cities. Many down here drive to San Diego or Las Vegas for the weekend and you're also close to some natually beautiful areas such as Sedona and Prescott plus a couple hours from Mexico.

Why is this even a question? Phoenix is a homogenous cesspool of unfettered growth;
Have you even BEEN to Phoenix? Take a look on the Phoenix forum and read the thread about the developments going on downtown. Phoenix may not be Chicago but it's a great city to live in.
One thing that always gets me about visitors to Chicago is how often I hear, "I had no idea the lake was that big!" as if they expected to look out across it and see the Michigan shore on the other side.
How does Chicago stack up to Washington D.C. ?
I know how great the Field Museum is. Does the Smithsonian
measure up ? Which is the better culture trip.
I love raising my family away from big cities... yet every
once in a while it's great to visit them.
