And although the overall child population is declining in pricey cities such as San Francisco and New York's Manhattan, the areas are seeing an uptick in young whites. Other urban centers such as Denver, Washington, Arlington, Va., and Brooklyn, N.Y., also are seeing increases.

It's probably due to gentrification and crime dropping.
Everyone, especially young people want to live close to downtown, close to all the action and fun stuff.
But no one wants to live in a violent or seedy area if they have the money to avoid it.

Boston has increased its share of the white population and so has DC.

I suspect the child population in Manhattan is increasing but I couldn't find the data.

I notice a ton of young white kids and white women pushing strollers in certain areas of San Francisco (parts of the Richmond, Inner Sunset, Noe Valley, Marina). Most send their kids to private schools so its not having much of an impact on the public schools.

Yeah, if you're in SOMA, nary a child to be found, but plenty of young, successful white people.

I think that the main reason you find a lack of children in these areas is that the sort of career that will bring you the six figures necessary to live in an area like downtown require so many hours that there's no way you can raise a child properly; many of the people who end up going for this life were brought up by parents who were successful and had careers that necessitated this too, and are turned off by the notion of doing the same.

Others see the responsibility of rearing a child to be an impactful detriment on the time that they have off from work, which they use to decompress.

To make enough money to be "competetive" with your contemporaries in terms of clothing, gadgets, cars, activities, memberships, etc. and still have all your personal mail sent to a zipcode with panache and have a kid would mean that your spouse would also have to work a similar job to be able to afford the extra room or two. If they are working a similar job, they probably want their decompress time too, and aren't interested in having a kid either. If you make enough to support a significant other, you may have to submit to the reality of living in a suburb, driving a slightly-less flashy car (after all, your wife needs something to get groceries in while you're out), maybe not having everything in your wardrobe custom-tailored, and you won't be able to spend every Friday and Saturday getting blasted with the other guys from work, your alma mater, or entertaining your out-of-town contemporaries because you've got a marriage and family to maintain.

Atlanta went from 33% white in 2000 to 43% white in 2009.
