I've been looking at Seattle a lot lately, I think the more scenic thing is an understatement, even though Portland is scenic Seattle blows it out of the water IMO. Combine that with a bigger more urban city and to me it would be a no brainer. Close to Vancouver would also be a plus.

Which industry do you work in? One city may have more jobs for you or may need your business?

I'd rate Seattle as more expensive than Southern California (not the Bay Area though). Traffic is worse too. Add to that the awful weather and depressing drug infested downtown and I frankly don't get it. Plus the locals are weird. I guess it's scenic the three days of the year you can actually see anyting. The rest of the time it's just gray and impossible to see any vista.
Portland is a much better choice. Lots of affordable areas, a better downtown, and better access to less rainy getaways (the high desert of Central Oregon- if you value your mental health you will have to leave Portland on many weekends). That said, your choice would presumably be driven by your job.
Unless you love rain, you should consider Denver, Bosie, and other mid sized western cities.
Also, if you can afford Seattle, most of San DIego is cheaper than Seattle and it is a much better place to live.

So much incorrect information and ignorance in this comment that I don't find it time effective to critique each error.

In what way? By nearby surroundings or backdrop?

Hills, architecture, views, surrounding water, mountains, forests, dense craftsman houses, mansions overlooking huge vistas... Seattle is more dramatic. I'd be interested in someone offering photos of both cities to give a better example to this.

I can't do photos. But I could offer some cool Google Street view shots of Seattle...

This is the best I can do at the moment. Someone else can do Portland.

I find this comparison interesting.

Here's what Google images returns for each city + waterfront:

Seattle

Portland

Certainly Seattle's is much larger and more "urban" and features more architecture. But ... it's really not all that pretty. And where's the "nature?"

But as for the residential areas ... Seattle and Portland are pretty interchangeable. Puget Sound is without a doubt gorgeous. But Seattle, as a whole, does not "blow Portland out of the water."

I don't get why Portland is so underrated on here for natural beauty. I think it's every bit as beautiful as Seattle. The only thing missing is a huge body of water.
