current populations are easy to change. Houston and ATL are two good examples of that.

The Blk population in ATL boomed in the past 20 yrs, while the white population in Houston plummeted.

History- not so easy to change.

Population demographics- can be flipped in a decade or two.

so roots and history are MUCH more important in looking at the development of a city rather than current demographics

Oh, I most certainly do not fall into the camp that "take having a high black population as such a stain," and you can bet on it.

After witnessing your post history from your several different incarnations though, I can certainly state that you ARE one of those people. You may be able to fool some of the newer folks here with your "code speak" when it comes to bashing Atlanta, but you fool far, far fewer than you imagine you do.

Power and influences relies on politics and culture. Races tend to stick up and vote for their own; the Hispanic population in Dallas and Houston is much larger than the black populations. So no; history and roots don't have much to do with anything in today's times.

Actually, Htownlove made some excellent points. Its your problem if you don't choose to accept them.

Not sure where you're going with the political thing. Has Houston even ever had a Hispanic mayor? Who are the big Hispanic movers and shakers in Houston? Where are all the historic Hispanic neighborhoods? Hispanic landmarks?

Have you ever been to Atlanta?

Harris County (Houston) has like the 3rd largest Hispanic population in the US.

The Hispanic media market in Houston is the largest in the state.

That tells me nothing other than that there is a very large Hispanic community in Houston. Still doesn't put it on the level of blacks in Atlanta, except where population numbers are concerned.

Accept what?? Houston has over 2 and half million Latinos living within its metropolitan area; yet you're going to tell me they don't have the same amount of influence or power as blacks in Atlanta?? Have you been the supermarkets or stores lately?? Have you not noticed the Spanish language all over the city??? Get real.

Houston and Dallas are ranked as two of the highest cities with successful Latinos. Houston is now seen as destination for many rich Mexicans; along with its suburb [The Woodlands].

excellent points. Houston has a long and rich Black History.
I remember all the noise that was made about Houston being the biggest City to vote a black Mayor into office (something like that). There were also many other black congressmen and other politicians who have made waves in Houston.

On the flip side there have not been very many Hispanic movers and shakers in Houston (I will let Dallas people speak for Dallas).

In fact I remember that Brown ran against a Hispanic and although the blacks have a smaller population, Brown won.

Our History Books are filled with important Blk people that did something or the other for Houston, but very few Hispanic names are in there. Heck Texans credit a black woman, "The Yellow Rose of Texas" for winning the Texas Independence war.

I don't think he is saying that The hispanics don't currently have influence, I think he is saying that the long history that Blacks developed in ATL cannot be matched by the hispanic history in Houston and Dallas. The 5M Mexicans who moved to Texas in the last 20 years don't instantly create a history. His original point is about the roots that that particular minority has in that city.

Houston, like ATL has historically black Colleges. Where are the historically Mexican Colleges. Houston shared the struggle of AAs in the south, but just not on a grand scale as ATL. The hispanics in Houston never matched the struggle of the Blacks in Houston let alone to be on the same scale of the BLKs in ATL.

The term Hispanic meant something else up until the 1970's. There was no presence because it was like they did not exist. Well they existed but they were classified as sub groups in the white or blk category
