Pittsburgh is an interesting option. I guess it does have some fairly urban parts and hilly geography along with the desired seasonal variations. The "vibes" are really different from SF though.
What about the fact that the Bay Area is a major international center of foreign immigration and settlement, a center of global commerce, global trade, global business, tourism, and is one of the world's culinary capitals, is one of the most well known and most desirable places to live and work.
Portland, while nice doesnt really do all that.
Nor does Seattle.
Boston comes closer in that respect but still does not have the same international cache of San Francisco.
The Bay Area is almost a hybrid of New York(the whole international commerce thing) and Los Angeles(far more physically similar to the Bay Area than Seattle or Portland).

I have never seen any reputable world cities index putting the Bay Area in the same ranking as New York or Los Angeles. Only boosters do that. ;-)

I have never seen any overall world cities index putting the Bay Area in the same ranking as New York or Los Angeles or Paris
Well, today is your lucky day cause Im here to help:
Quote:
THE WORLD'S MOST WELL ROUNDED CITIES by GaWC released in 2004
Five levels of global city are identified. First, and clearly above all others, there are London and New York. All previous research has highlighted the dominance of these two cities in the world city hierarchy (Taylor 2004a) and they emerge here as the most important 'all-round' global contributors. They are followed by three cities that make smaller all-round contribution and with particular cultural strengths: Los Angeles, Paris and San Francisco. Finally, among 'all-rounders' there are seven incipient world cities identified in Table 11. In the second category of global niche cities, the three leading Pacific Asian cities are critical economic nodes in the world city network and there are also three critical nodes that are non-economic: Brussels, Geneva and Washington, DC. Thus a total of 18 cities are deemed to be global, actual or incipient.
The remaining world cities encompass articulator and niche cities. The former are focussed upon subnets and there are 13 distributed between the three non-economic spheres. Classic examples are Vienna at the centre of a UN agency subnet and Nairobi at the centre of a NGO subnet. There are 21niche world cities identified of which seven have important concentrations of economic activities and 14 concentrations of non-economic activities. Frankfurt is typical of the first group with its concentration of banks while Manila is typical of the second group with its concentration of NGOs.
These two sets of cities represent the upper echelons of the hierarchical tendencies in world city networks. To reiterate a point made in the introduction, they do not encompass all globalization processes, all cities
GLOBAL as so involved, but they are the key locales that network formation agents are using in their everyday activities that are creating world city networks. CITIES
Well rounded global Very large contribution: London and New York Smaller contribution and with cultural bias: Los Angeles, Paris and San Francisco
ii Incipient global cities: Amsterdam, Boston, Chicago, Madrid, Milan, Moscow, Toronto
Global niche cities - specialised global contributions
i Economic: Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo
ii Political and social: Brussels, Geneva, and Washington
WORLD CITIES
Subnet articulator cities
i Cultural: Berlin, Copenhagen, Melbourne, Munich, Oslo, Rome, Stockholm Political: Bangkok, Beijing, Vienna
ii Social: Manila, Nairobi, Ottawa
Worldwide leading cities
i Primarily economic global contributions: Frankfurt, Miami, Munich, Osaka, Singapore, Sydney, Zurich
ii Primarily non-economic global contributions: Abidjan, Addis Ababa, Atlanta, Basle, Barcelona, Cairo, Denver, Harare, Lyon, Manila, Mexico City, Mumbai, New Delhi, Shanghai
So as far as cultural, social, political and economic impact, San Francisco is either tied for 3rd or is 3rd, 4th or 5th along with Paris and Los Angeles.
WOW.
And that 2004 was actually before the social media revolution, btw.
Oh and here;s a very recent ranking from the a Chinese think tank and the Wall Street Journal ranking the World's 10 most competitive urban economies:
10 most Competitive Urban Economies in the World, July 2012
1 New York
2 London
3 Tokyo
4 Paris
5 San Francisco
6 Chicago
7 Los Angeles
8 Singapore
9 Hong Kong
10 Seoul
Note to mods. I am aware that we do not compare NA cities to non-NA cities however this is not to compare but rather to help BigCityDreamer as he inquired information and was desparately seeking assistance.

Glad I could be of assistance.

LOL. No, I did not need assistance as I'm well aware of global city rankings. And GaWC does NOT rank the Bay Area with New York or Paris. The mods deleted my links in another thread so they'll probably do the same with them here. Plus, your data is old - it's from 2004. And who cares what the Chinese think? That's hardly an objective source. LOL.
Okay, now here are the reputable global cities indexes:
Notice San Francisco's ranking on all of these compared with New York and Paris. I'll almost have to give you Los Angeles though, it has many areas of weakness it looks like.

Actually a ranking of office locations and satellite offices is very unimportant to me. Im more interested in headquarters and this is how GAWC ranks headquarter cities:
Quote:
By MSA(Metropolitan Statistical Area)
From the Report: The study uses “The Forbes Global 2000” ranking for 2010 which is the longest worldwide listing of large corporations publicly available.
For each city the revenues of firms headquartered there are combined to produce the research results: total revenues for 450 metropolitan areas from their Forbes2000 corporations is USD 29,890.17 billion
To facilitate interpretation and ease comparison with other studies we have reclassified the companies operating in these various industry categories into the ten basic sectors of the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) used by Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) and Standard & Poor's (S&P).
GICS Sectors:
1 Consumer Discretionary: Hotels, Restaurants, Leisure, Media, Retail
2 Consumer Staples: Food Markets, Household & Personal Products, Food, Drink & Tobacco
3 Energy: Oil & Gas Operations
4 Financials: Banking, Diversified Financials, Insurance
5 Health Care: Health Care Equipment, Drugs & Biotech
6 Industrials: Business Services & Supplies, Capital Goods, Conglomerates, Construction, Trading, Transport, Aerospace & Defense
7 Information Technology: Software & Services, Technology & Hardware, Semiconductors
8 Materials: Chemicals
9 Telecommunications Services
10 Utilities
8 US Cities made the ranking
1 New York
2 Dallas
3 San Francisco
4 Chicago
5 Fayetteville, AR(LOL)
6 Houston
7 Minneapolis
8 San Jose
Collectively the Bay Area is 5th in the World, but I already knew that.

Plus, your data is old - it's from 2004.
Yeah, if they were to do the same ranking now the Bay Area would probably rank no lower than 3rd.
Right. 2004 is before the Bay Area took over wireless communications as we now know it, social media and started making inroads into the automotive industry and energy industry.

Hahahahaha.....they own about $1 Trillion worth of DCs debt so you in particular had better pay attention to what they think.
