LA and DC have better food/sports/neighborhoods/urban core density/extensive public transportation (as going by the OP criteria) than Philadelphia?
Philadelphia at the least is ahead of DC in food. ****, every city here beats DC in food, and at best, Philly is tied with LA in food, if not surpasses. Philadelphia has more historic neighborhoods than LA and DC, has more urban core density than LA and DC, and more extensive public transportation considering the SEPTA goes to the suburbs. Admittedly not as strong whatsoever in comparison to DC in the city itself, but outside the city, it's even more extensive than the T in Boston.
Sports scene? Philadelphia has better fans and better scenes than both LA and DC. Better fans in terms of selling out, passion, loyalty, not obnoxiousness.
Local food scene (you automatically think of city when type of food is mentioned)
LA, Chicago, SF, Boston, Philly, DC
Recognizable from a single photo (standard city shot)
SF, LA, Chicago, DC, Boston, Philly
Philly is right behind Chicago and SF and ahead of LA, Boston and DC in terms of food.
How is Philly behind Boston in terms of single photo?
There is no single picture of Boston that is instantly recognizable or tells you, "yeah, that's definitely Boston."
SF has the Golden Gate Bridge, LA has the Hollywood Sign, Chicago has the Willis (Sears) Tower, DC has the White House/Capitol Buildling/Washington Monument.
Of the remaining two, Philadelphia has the next most iconic or recognizable feature in a photo. The Liberty Bell or Independence Hall. I literally can't think of what defining feature or Boston at all.

No chance in Hell that Philly is ahead of LA in terms of food. I personally think LA has the best food scene in the country...or at least is tied with NYC.

And he personally thinks that Philadelphia is ahead of L.A. in this regard. At the end of the day, the place with the best food is where you are. I certainly believe that Chicago's food scene is better than Atlanta's. That said, I'm not starving!
No slight to Boston but not one of those are. But to be fair I think only LA, NYC, DC (solely because of the Whitehouse) and San Francisco are the only US
cities that are widely recognizable by one photo.
