Meaning they have a big impact on American culture as a whole. Seems like NYC is the most obvious answer but apparently Seattle has a big impact too since it is the home of Starbucks and things considered stereotypically "white".

As for California, I think Silicon Valley/Bay Area are key as tech is the fastest growing market and they are the home of tech companies.

DC obviously has a lot of influence because of politics.

Want to know what key cities I might have missed because I have missed quite a few! I know it!

LA more than anywhere else, followed by the other big West Coast metros. At least it seems to me like social, political, artistic, and musical trends tend to start there before spreading out.

Based on what? Not one major genre spawned from the West Coast.

Well, grunge from Seattle comes to mind easily, but from the LA area, there's hardcore punk, gangsta rap, and nu metal.

Hip Hop is NYC so is rap, Blues, Jazz, Motown, Country, Rock and Roll, Blue Grass.

They may have put spins on it but almost all American music genre originated east of the Mississippi. Grunge and NU Metal are sub genres.

I'd agree that last century NYC was a big influence on the rest of the country, but now it's definitely the west coast!! NYC seems to loose influence year over year.

Yeah, California always looks crazy when it comes out with things like same sex marriage even though Mass was the first state to legalize it California cities were the first to allow domestic partnerships in the 80s. Medical marijuana started in California in 1996, and CA is the single reason why marijuana is where it is today. It's unbelievable how backwards east coast states have been on this front. Kudos to mass for being the pioneer.

Then you got things like Blue jeans, fast food it took a state like California to create something like McDonald's winch has had unbelievable success. It's a shame they moved to Illinois, but this was when Chicago was a more important city.

And yet, CA was the last west coast state (other than Hawaii) to legalize recreational marijuana. Even Alaska beat us to it. And for same sex marriage, CA may have been 2nd (after MA) at one time, but the voters revoked it and a dozen states added it before CA finally got it back five years later. It’s weird. A lot of ideas probably get started and publicized here, but nowadays many other states end up putting those ideas into action before we do.
