so has this become a comparison of downtowns? because i will gladly concede that pittsburgh has a more impressive downtown, due in large part to topography and access. pittsburgh was not able to sprawl like st. louis because of its geographic constraints (i.e. mountains, rivers, etc), which is a double-edged sword. on the one hand it keeps the population relatively centralized and sustains a healthier downtown; on the other hand it prevents the elasticity of population shifts, which could be a factor in the metropolitan population decline of pittsburgh as opposed to st. louis, whose metropolitan area has been growing modestly since the day the city was founded.

it is indisputable that st. louis's rail system is far more impressive with much higher ridership. Not sure about the overall transit use between the two cities. but since rail is all the rage these days, st. louis has the edge here.

there is no denying that pittsburgh is a city to watch. it is doing amazing things and will continue to improve. the real ignorance here is reading how many people seem to be underestimating st. louis's prowess in the comeback department as well. the misconceptions are astounding. to the person asking if st. louis has "any trendy neighborhoods"-- are you kidding? for every hip neighborhood in pittsburgh there is at least one in st. louis that can be considered a parallel.

both are comeback cities. both enjoy strengths in different categories.

The economy in the east is much more vibrant with a lot of large metros closer to Pittsburgh that job relocations may go to than compared with St. Louis.

In Pittsburgh you're close to Philadelphia, Baltimore, Cleveland, Columbus, New York, Washington, New Jersey, etc. A very densely populated area of the country.

In St. Louis you're a good drive away from Kansas City, Chicago, and Memphis. Pittsburgh has a much more lively downtown and a lot more going on in it than St. Louis does, that's just an obvious fact. And the fact that St. Louis's city population continues to decline while the metro grows shows less of an emphasis on the downtown enviornment and more so on the outlying suburban towns/cities.

Pittsburgh is projected to receive population growth over the next few years where St. Louis is not.
The first thing I bolded is a bit odd if you really are betting on that... Come on man, really, you think it's that simple?

Also:

Pittsburgh (Distance to in miles)
New York 316

St. Louis (Distance to in miles)
Indy 232
KC 235
Louisville 243
Memphis 247
Nashville 258
Chicago 261
Des Moines 270
Little Rock 294
Madison 308
Cincinnati 312
Milwaukee 326

Yeah, Pit is closer to a lot of big cities, and that can be great, but lets come back to reality a bit. Not to mention, the idea of trying to claim other metros attributes as your own in a comparison of just two is odd, but did the US economy really get that bad that nobody flies anymore??? I can take weekend trips from either city with ease guys...

And the next bold is a bit of a logic fail on its own, but just for your information: Downtown St. Louis has had over $5 Billion worth of investment since the last census and and one of the tracts grew by 226%. Sounds like at least a slight emphasis to me. No doubt the downtown was in pretty bad shape not too long ago, but it has been coming a pretty long way. Plus, anyone who knows St. Louis at all knows it's the varied neighborhoods of the city that help make it so special, it is not a one trick pony kind of city which is awesome, but it can be an issue for tourists not in the know about the city who just think about downtowns.

Cities like St. Louis, Pit, Cincy, Cleveland have a whole lot to offer at a great value, with how much in common they really have some of the fighting needs to chill a bit...

See my post above, but Google is your friend... Then again, you are up there with DP with hating on St. Louis for some reason.

The pittsburgh busway is one of the smartest mass transit projects I've ever seen.
