Seattle being of huge importance to the PNW is one thing but the PNW is still smaller than Northern California which has 16 Million people and a larger economy than every state except CA, TX and NY.

So basically your saying that its okay to pick 2 SoCal cities, one of which(SD) is way less important on the national and world level than SF, and Seattle which is big and influential, but more than SF, No.

The Bay Area is a bigger corporate center than anywhere on the West Coast including LA. SF is the financial center of the West and Silicon Valley is the most relevant economic region in the world at this point in time.

But to each his own. I'm not here to change your mind, just present the facts.

San Jose isn't well known outside the area but that is a profit driving megaforce if you include silicon Valley area between San Jose & SF. I agree that Seattle has great prescence and several corporations develped there into the world's top including:

Boeing - #1 commercial aricraft builder
Microsoft - #1 software company
Starbucks - #1 coffee company
Amazon - #1 online retailer
Expedia - #1 online travel agency
Costco -#1 wholesale/retail company

I would have no trouble with the Bay Area as number 2. San Francisco is in fact an odd Place. It does not fit well as a component of the Bay Area...particularly not in a list that includes San Jose. And many from SF would deny it as a component of anything else.


It is a major financial center. That rates it right up there just below Charlotte, NC. in the overall scheme of things.

But the Bay area? Number two to LA followed by Seattle and the rest.

I think it more rational to run theswe kinds of things against MSAs. SF or even San Diego or Las Vegas are just too small to play.

Seattle gets to claim Costco and Microsoft even though those companies are not located in the city of Seattle, but when it comes to the Bay Area, suddenly people become technical and extremely aware of city limits and have amnesia regarding metropolitan areas.

And the city of San Francisco is the centerpiece and most important city of the Bay Area. That's why the larger economy of the region must be taken into account, just as it is in LA, Seattle, Portland, et al.

San Diego doesn't really rate among the top 3, in my opinion. It's more like the Jacksonville of the west.
