Personally I love winter. Denver has the most snow and is very close to the Rockies so I'd pick there.
DC probably has the mildest winter and while it does get the occasional nor-easter, those storms are way over dramatized. While getting "caught" in one in Philadelphia, it snowed 20" in a day and was melted a day later

Interesting, I had a feeling DC would be the mildest in actuality.

Louisville is by far easiest. It is the furthest south. Denver is the sunniest though. All those cities ROCK! Any would be a great choice. Louisville is a bit smaller than Portland or Denver, but it packs quite a punch and is very accessible. DC is a major city...whole other animal.

DC has mild winters. The average winter temperture of DC and Louisville is nearly identical. Louisville has more snow days but average slightly less snowfall. And I do mean slightly.
I have a feeling I would fare that way too. The lack of sunlight and consistent precipitation would probably bother me more than the temp and slightly more snowfall. I am usually OK in Chicago winters but a few winters ago the winter wasn't very cold, but was abnormally grey and I was going bonkers waiting for the sun to come out.
