I wouldn't have thought any city in Iowa would have a Black population of over 10%. Des Moines is right at 10%.
Davenport is at 10% as well, if I'm not mistaken.
I know about Waterloo, because some people from my dad's hometown moved there originally as migrant farmers/workers, then stayed in the area.
I will say that it is remarkable for a city like that to have 2 Black owned radio stations, when there are cities with higher Black percentages that don't have any.
I also find that it is a city with overwhelmingly Black neighborhoods in a state you don't expect to see such a thing.
For me I would say
Milwaukee(over 40 percent black I believe)
Dallas(over 25 percent)
Indianapolis(around 30 percent)
Boston(around 30 percent if you include the dominicans)
Jacksonville(30 percent)
Cincinnati(44 percent)
You didn't mention DC, St Louis, Atlanta, New Orleans, Philly, Chicago, memphis,Baltimore, Detroit, but I believe that they are in fact known for their black populations so I don't know if it counts to put them in my response.
I don't remember seeing these communities in the thread, but are a couple of very small MI cities with very high Black percentages are Benton Harbor and Muskegon Heights. Both have around 10-11,000 people each and are 89% and 78% Black, respectively. Albion, a small city of 8600 in MI is 30% Black. Muskegon is 35% Black and Saginaw is 46% Black.
It seems that a lot of people don't realize that most of the small and midsize cities in Michigan have a sizable black population. They seem to think that they all live in Detroit (or maybe Flint.) A few might suspect Saginaw, Benton Harbor, and Lansing (which is about 25 percent.) But people don't seem to know about Muskegon for some reason, and they also forget about Pontiac (52 percent black), probably because it's in Oakland County. In addition, Kalamazoo (22 percent), Grand Rapids (20 percent), Jackson (20 percent) and Battle Creek (18 percent) all have sizable black populations.

Exactly and I never understood that. There's places like Ypsilanti, Dowagiac, Cassopolis/Vadalia, Baldwin, Covert, Sumpter Township and other smaller communities that have substantial Black populations, given their size and location. This doesn't include places like Port Huron, Ann Arbor and select suburbs in the smaller metros like the Waverly area in Lansing, East Kentwood in Grand Rapids and the Flint suburbs just W/NW/N of the city, that have notable Black populations as well.
