i think most dont know memphis has a large black population eventhough i think it is the metro with the largest black percentage (i find that interesting).
maybe st louis would be another one that isnt known to have a large black population even though it does ?

But people don't seem to know about Muskegon for some reason, and they also forget about Pontiac (52 percent black), probably because it's in Oakland County. In addition, Kalamazoo (22 percent), Grand Rapids (20 percent), Jackson (20 percent) and Battle Creek (18 percent) all have sizable black populations.
not trying to sound rude but i havent heard of most of those places. based on the question on the op i think people dont recognize those black population centers because they dont know about those areas.

I think people aren't surprised about Memphis due to its location and its history in regards to Blues music. I believe that it is the metro with at least 1 million people with the highest Black percentage.

I'm thinking the OP was looking for cities that people don't think about, but have at least substantial Black populations/percentages.

Another smaller Midwestern city that people may not know much about is Decatur IL, which is a city of about 76,000 and is about 23% Black(17,704 population).

Great info here. I've heard of that place but never knew it had that large of a black population % or total population.

Speaking of Illinois, the adjacent cities of Champaign and Urbana are others that come to mind.

Champaign 15.8% (13,062)
Urbana 16.4% (6,818)

I think Ludacris is from Champaign originally.

Ohio has small cities like Lima(26%), Mansfield(22%), Canton(24%) and Warren(28%), that people may not know about. Lorain is about 18% Black and all 5 of these cities have at least 10,000 Black people.

Question, are we excluding military metros? They have a tendency to boost places like San Antonio and Anchorage, albeit marginally.
