Atlanta is not anything like NYC. NYC is a mega metropolis that is a head and shoulders above pretty much every city on the planet. While it's no NYC, Atlanta's a great place. It has a lot of urban amenities in a pretty setting with some nice suburbs and a pleasing southern sensibility. If you're from NJ and looking for a change of pace, you'll probably be really pleased with Atlanta. Come on down.
Yeah Atlanta is far more like HOuston than it is NY.
Since you prefer Hip Hop Atlanta would provide the best Nightlife for you although Houston is no slouch in the Hip Hop arena either. A few videos showing examples of goings on at some Atlanta Hip Hop venues. These videos are a little bit dated being about three years old.

Well there is the whole Uptown/Galleria and Buckhead thing. Those two areas remind me a lot of each other. And they are both considered major commercial and business centers outside of the central core and both about the same distance from the core of each downtown. Both cities have a Southern vibe (moreso in Atlanta) and both have a strong freeway culture with wide roadways and heavy traffic. And the two have a strong hip hop presence as well.

Most of those things you just said relate to sprawl. Charlotte has more in common with Atlanta than Houston does.

Can we finally get something straight? Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington D.C., Bay Area, are all huge sprawling Metros with dense urban cores. Atlanta is a sprawling Metro without a very dense core. It's not the fact that Atlanta is sprawling that makes it so different than those other Metros. It's the fact that it's core is not nearly as dense that makes it stand out in a bad way.
Atlanta still sprawls really badly. It's metro land area is much larger then the average large metro. Atlanta's metro area land size is just as large as the 31m Tokyo urban area.
