Ontario versus all of New England? This isn't really close -- and I've spent my fair share of time in Ontario, and a bit of time in New England.
I prefer the states of New England on scenery, quality of life, education, tourism and education. No offence to Ontario, but New England is right up there as one of the most appealing regions in North America. It has the Atlantic Ocean, a couple of mountain ranges, and some very unique cities and villages. There are only two areas that Ontario -might- have an upper hand, safety and economy. Even that is questionable.
New England has the Maine coastline… the White Mountains in New Hampshire… the rushing rivers and rolling green hills of Vermont. Outstanding architecture and gorgeous small towns. And while Toronto and Boston probably cancel each other out (great cities both), I would argue that the combination of Providence/Newport/Burlington/Portland outdoes Ottawa/Kingston/London/Niagara (thought Ottawa is a great city, and is a touch New England itself).
I think a more fair comparison would be Ontario vs. Massachusetts. Or the Canadian Maritimes vs. New England.
People forget just how gigantic Ontario is, much bigger than New England.
It has shorelines on 4 of the 5 Great Lakes and stretches as far north as the arctic tundra of Hudson Bay,
where Polar Bear Provincial Park is located and has rugged very remote wilderness areas larger than
all of the New England states combined.

Just curious: In what sense? I have always found Toronto to be underwhelming and uninspiring.
