Columbia. One of the better small metro areas in the nation and underrated, IMO. Great location. Very convenient to the coast, mountains, Charlotte, and Atlanta. I like Lexington as well, but Columbia offers more overall.
Rochester, NY or Grand Rapids, MI?
Tough one, but I'll go with Rochester, because NY> MI, and if I want Chicago access, it would be a very short flight from Rochester.
Knoxville for the culture and its proximity to the Great Smokies.
Pittsburgh or Indianapolis
Pittsburgh. They're lagging population and economy is worrisome. But their upside in recreational assets, topography, and food tips the scales for me. Indy isn't as bad as many C-Ders think, but I still prefer Pittsburgh.

Boston, MA or Denver, CO?
Pittsburgh's economy is growing in the tech/eds and meds and white collar sector. It is the blue collar manufacturing base that is continuing to decline. The data would suggest all doom and gloom but the reality is the 21st century economy is growing there.

Resuming the game:
Boston.
I'm not that outdoorsy, but I'm pretty bookish, and besides, I prefer beaches to mountains.

(But I never learned to swim. Go figure.)
Branson, Mo., or Pigeon Forge, Tenn.?
Pigeon Forge, close to Asheville and Knoxville.
Denver, CO or Austin, TX?
