It is ridiculous. Doesn't LA county or some other place on the outskirts of LA have a high number of homicides, robberies and rapes?
Yes, it's a huge area and there are other pockets. There have been 177 murders reported in LA per the stat above, and in looking there were 100 other murders reported to the LA County sheriff's office in other areas of the county. I know San Bernadino and areas of Riverside County see a decent amount as well.
LA area isn't like metro Chicago where virtually all the violent crime is isolated into two distinct areas of the city itself and most all of the suburbs have very low rates of violence. I can only think of the suburb of Maywood just to the west and then small pocket of southern suburbs like Dolton, Robbins and Harvey that have a lot of crime. The combined population of those suburban areas is less than 1% of the metro population.
Well and of course Gary. Some pockets of Joliet and Aurora have issues way out to the southwest and west.

That's very true that crime in Chicago mostly happens in two, maybe three, districts. Not to say crime doesn't happen in other parts of the city but its concentrated in those few areas. Most of the city is quite peaceful actually, people just see the news and assume the whole city is in chaos.
I agree that in California more of the crime is spread around but Chicagos deep south side really is bad. You go to a bp right off the freeway and theres 10 dudes deep blocking the door lol definately a area you be aware
I think Maywood's rundown areas look worse because they're denser. Harvey has a lot of lots and bigger plots of lands that makes it look more open and suburban.

You know the thing about Maywood in comparison to Harvey is that Maywood has more housing stock, better built homes, and better looking areas in general. Maywood has much more going for it as a suburb than Harvey it amazes me that there aren't any plans to revitalize the area.
Denver has had increasing homicide rates since the beginning of the decade, for example back in 2010 it had 33 homicides in the entire city. The all-time record low in Denver 32 back in 2000.
Omaha, Nebraska 17 homicides. Omaha last homicide was on July 25th, went from January 26 to March 22nd without a homicide also the gaps are getting longer and longer.
Birmingham, AL 68 homicides population: 210,000
Jackson, MS 37 homicides population: 170,000
Little Rock, AR 45 homicides population: 190,000
New Orleans, LA 110 homicides population: 380,000
