Lowell MA and Cambridge are only separated by 1000 people or less and Lowell is more stand alone. Both are about 111k/112
Probably why the metro area is titled Boston-Cambridge-Newton. Although I haven’t checked Newton’s total population.
When the metro is named Lowell was larger than Cambridge. Cambridge only became larger than law in the past five years there are also several cities in the metro larger than Newton such as Quincy Brockton and Lynn.
I suspect the metro is named in Boston Cambridge Newton because that’s where the bulk of the economic activity is.
Is cambridge ma recognized nationally? I thought it would be but I don’t know
I was going off the cities in the OP's poll, and picking my top 3.
Cambridge may be known because of Harvard/MIT, but it is too small, IMO, to significantly increase in prominence if Boston wasn't there. Cambridge would be more similar to New Haven than it would to the 3 much larger cities that I listed.

I suppose..I think that if Boston wasn’t there though Cambridge would inevitably grow or grow what was around it specifically because of harvard and mit..the economic impact of those places is pretty mind blowing
